Sensory Composition Project
Umbria Art Residency, Italy, 2014–2015
How Might We Capture the Sensory Experience of a Place Without Going There? Three Stories of Monestevole is a project in which I focused on deconstructing and reconstructing the hard-to-describe sensory experience of being in a place.
I. A Day in the Life, Unbundled. Elements of daily life at Monestevole were broken down into a flat visual hierarchy where cars and humans are the size of tomato plants and telephones. Visitors are invited to explore the three narratives on the accompanying website.
II. A Day in the Life, Told in Parts. I individually catalogued elements of the sensory experience of Monestevole. Click each element to explore the component stories — from flora and fauna to architectural, interior, culinary and utilities — that make up the experience of life on site.
III. A Day in the Life, Filmed. I attached cameras to the people who live and work there, and created a film from the footage of an average (and delightful!) day of life on site.
